Well, thought I would take a little break from my vacation post series and post something about a little road trip we went on yesterday! :o)
So, Elisabeth, Mary-ellen and I started off in the morning from home on the scooter for a little town about 25 miles away called Dhanoulti. We finally bought helmets in Dehra Dun a couple weeks before, so the trip was feasible now ;). The drive there is beautiful, because the town Dhanoulti is tucked into the foothills, so you wind and twist along the road that traverses the ridge. Looking down from one side, you can see out into the valley of Dehra Dun. And looking out to the other side, you can see more ridges, foothills, and the snow-capped mountains of the Indian Himalaya. It's very fun to drive along, and the roads are in quite good condition! There was some snow still on the roads and around as we got closer to Dhanoulti.

So, we finally arrived at Dhanoulti. It's a very sleepy, backcountry town and we did feel quite conspicuous when we first got in!! We wore salwar kameez, because it's not really appropriate to wear western, tight-fitting jeans and shirts in more rural areas like these. Our first stop was a little roadside cafe located in a hotel there--the area caters to lots of Delhi tourists who come in the summer to escape the Delhi heat--and we ate delicious paranthas, a kind of stuffed roti, there. Yum! Next, we went to a little sweater/weaving shop in the town. I got a very cool handmade sweater and angoura scarf there. It was quite awesome!

After this, we went to this funny little place called the "Dhanoulti Eco Park", a kind of picnic spot and hangout place for Delhi tourists in the summertime. It was worth every rupee of our ten cent entry fee, possibly for entertainment sources. The park did have some nice views over the ridge... and some very interesting playground equipment! It was definitely something you only see in India.
